EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE DISPOSAL
THE MISSION
The mission of Explosive Ordnance Disposal is to protect people, resources, and the environment by eliminating or reducing the threat posed by hazardous US or foreign explosive, chemical, incendiary, nuclear, or biological ordnance and other hazardous explosive situations. What does this mean? If it explodes, our job is to stop it. Of course, our mission doesn't end there. We safe aircraft - from the ejection seat and countermeaseures to the gun, missiles, and bombs. We search for and disarm landmines. We render safe virtually any type of ordnance - whether it's a rocket-propelled grenade that lodged in a wall or a terrorist-built truck bomb. We are capable af safing nuclear, chemical, and biological ordnance and even assist the Secret Service in protecting the President of the United States.
We are EOD.
THE CRAB
The crab, as it is affectionately known, is the badge worn by every EOD tech. It is the only occupational badge in the military worn by Air Force, Army, Marines, and Navy alike. The crab is the most recognized symbol of the EOD profession in the world.

The Wreath
Symbolic of the achievements and laurels gained in minimizing accident potentials, through the ingenuity and devotion to duty to its members. It is in memory of those EOD techs who gave their lives while performing EOD duties.
The Bomb
Copied from the design of the World War II Bomb Disposal badge, the bomb represents the historic and major objective of the EOD mission, the unexploded bomb. The three fins represent the major areas of nuclear, conventional and biochem interest.
Lightning Bolts
Symbolize the potential destructive power of the bomb and the courage and professionalism of EOD personnel in their endeavors to reduce hazards as well as to render explosive ordnance harmless.
The Shield
Represents the EOD mission -- prevent a detonation and protect the surrounding area and property to the utmost.
