Proteus is a roleplaying game set in the world of Ortellum, home to the last remaining Humans in the galaxy. On a planet recovering from centuries of war, isolation, and disaster, humanity works alongside the races native to this world to forge a new home.

After escaping an Earth devastated by war, the Human race now lives in ancient ruins long since abandoned by those that constructed them. For decades the peoples of this planet sealed themselves off from one another and abandoned the wilderness beyond their cities. Only now have these races begun to emerge from their isolation and venture out into the world once again.

Nothing is easy on Ortellum. Distrust between species is a constant obstacle, and many nations must contend with internal conflict as well. Dangerous creatures, harsh terrain, and the threat of attack from all manner of hostile beings makes travel beyond major settlements risky at best, and only the brave or foolish wander far from the beaten path

Life is hard, and simply surviving can be a challenge. Human civilization has taken a giant step backwards. Electricity, once taken for granted, is available to only small segments of the population, and even then is unreliable. Machinery and manufactured goods are no longer present in most people’s everyday lives. Indeed life for most Humans more closely resembles the dark ages than it does the 22nd century.

Despite all these challenges, amazing changes are taking place. Many species are working and living alongside one another more closely than ever before. Some of the abilities possessed by the native species are astounding, and a small percentage of Humans have begun to develop powerful abilities of their own – though whether these talents will prove to be a gift or a curse remains to be seen. Strange and amazing discoveries are made by those willing to seek them out. As you join those struggling to reclaim the planet, you will explore places long forgotten and encounter wonders that defy imagination.

    1. Core Rules

The individual articles for the Project Alpha chapters have been removed in favor of downloadable PDFs for each chapter, making the alpha rules much easier to read and check out.
Registered members can access and download all of the currently available alpha chapters in the Downloads area under Rules.

Keep in mind that these are all works in progress. Formatting may be inconsistent, portions may be incomplete or contain placeholder text, inconsistencies between chapters are likely, and spelling and grammar "fluctuations" are to be expected. Updates to individual chapters will occur regularly and will be mentioned in the blog.
Regardless, these chapters will allow players to get a feel for the game world and system. Take a look, and please post any questions, comments, or suggestions on the forums.

The Project Alpha Chapters currently available are:
    Chapter 02 - Basics
    Chapter 03 - Game Concepts
    Chapter 09 - Skills
    Chapter 13 - Tests
Chapter 16 - Damage and Recovery
    Chapter 17 - Advancement

    Lineage Character Creation System
Proteus Second Edition features the new Lineage character creation system. This new system allows players to design their characters sterting from the genetic level. Play as a Raagon-Human half-breed or a cross between Seitarin, Lanaari, and Fllorien. There are hundreds of possibilities!

    New Game System
Proteus Second Edition uses a new simplfied dice pool system that eliminates many of the adjustments that bog down gameplay. The dice pool and damage systems now both use six-sided dice.

    New Races
Proteus Second Edition features three new sentient races - Flloriens, Lanaari, and Yidiku. Players will now also be able to play as non-Human characters.

    New Novitic Abilities
Proteus Second Edition replaces psionics with new novitic abilities. The term novitics is derived from the latin word for energy. Characters with novitic potential can manipulate various forms of energy to create a wide range of effects. Players will be able to design custom novitic abilities on the fly, enabling their characters to adapt quickly to any situation.

    Improved Combat System
Proteus Second Edition uses a new combat system that retains the balance between cinematics and realism, while allowing for greater flexibility and more varied weapons and armor. The new incremental damage mechanic simplifies the relationship between the success of an attack and the damage caused by the weapon used.

Project Alpha is intended to allow virtually anyone to playtest Proteus Second Edition.

As Proteus Second Edition is written, the current "in progress" versions of several chapters will be posted on the base113 Games site. This will include only those chapters necessary to play the game, primarily game mechanics with little world detail. Players will be able to read and print these rules so they can try out the new system for themselves.

Any registered member of the base113 Games site can login and view the current versions of any Proteus Second Edition chapter currently on the site. Members can then read through and playtest the rules. Members may then post any comments or suggestions directly to the appropriate chapter.

Members are encouraged to post comments regarding rules they would like to see changed, as well as rules they like. Please make suggestions for correcting any perceived problems with the rules system. Also keep in mind that, since chapters will be updated regularly to allow members to test the most current version available, rules from different chapters may not always align with one another. Inconsistencies resulting from updating one chapter at a time will be corrected as other chapters are updated. However, should members discover inconsistencies between rules in a single chapter or between chapters that have been recently updated, they should of course point them out.

Hopefully this will serve to improve the quality of the final release of the game while also increasing the exposure of the gaming community to Proteus Second Edition.

Project Alpha will likely culminate in a PDF available through RPGNow that will include the same styles and layouts in the Core Rulebook, giving players a real taste of what is to come.

Registered members can access Project Alpha here.
